Track Your Next Period

Q. Is it true that I will get my first period when my weight reaches 40 kg?

A. Every girl is different when it comes to getting her first period. You may hear about some numbers about age and weight when it comes to girls getting their first period, but the truth is there are no rules. So don't worry about it.?

Q. Will I be able to tell when my first period is coming?

A. You may feel something like a lump or pain in your breast or have some vaginal discharge. Some girls start to see these signs of their first period about a year before their first period starts. If you notice any changes in your body, start preparing.

Q. Will I know when my first period comes?

A. If you have cramps in your belly or feel something warm flowing down from the area below your belly button, then that may be it! Take the pouch you have prepared, go to the bathroom and see for yourself. If you see brownish blood or pinkish bloody discharge in your panties, that means you are getting your first period.

Q. What should I do if I my period starts all of a sudden?

A. When you have your first period, you will usually have just slight bleeding on your panties, so don't panic! You can get pads at the school nurse's office. If you are not home or at school, you can use rolled up toilet tissue in an emergency. That will do the job until you go to a convenience store or a drug store to buy what you need.

Q. Is it true you don't get period until your older if you play sports?

A. It's not true that you won't get your period until later if you play sports. Do you see any changes in your body, like you are starting to experience vaginal discharge or developing hair under your arms or in your genital area? These are signs that your first period is on its way. But don't be that concerned if you haven't gotten your first period yet. You can just relax, enjoy yourself and wait for your first period to come. If you still don't get your first period when you reach 15 years of age, then talk to your parent, guardian or school nurse.

Q. I started getting vaginal discharge, and it seems a little different from last time.

A. Vaginal discharge normally is white or cream color and a little sticky. When it dries on your panties, it turns yellowish and cracks. Vaginal discharge may look different depending on your physical condition, so don't worry. If your vaginal discharge is thick like egg white (it's like this when you ovulate) or yellow (it's like this before your period), you may get your period soon. If you have itchiness or if your discharge begins to smell or is crumbly like soft cheese, talk to your parent and consult a doctor.
